ADVANCED OPTIONS FOR UPPER-JAW BONE LOSS

Zygomatic & pterygoid implants. More possibilities after bone loss.

Significant upper-jaw bone loss can make traditional dental implants difficult. Zygomatic and pterygoid implants use other areas of bone for support in selected cases. We’ll help you understand whether either option fits your health, anatomy, and goals.

Told bone loss rules out dental implants? There may be another way.

If you’ve been told you don’t have enough bone for traditional implants, a specialist evaluation can help you understand what options remain. Zygomatic and pterygoid implants use alternative areas of support in selected patients with significant upper-jaw bone loss.

Your surgeon reviews your 3D imaging, health, and goals before recommending an approach. These techniques are not suitable for everyone; we’ll explain the alternatives, benefits, and risks so you can make an informed decision.

Zygomatic implants: support from the cheekbone

Zygomatic implants anchor in the cheekbone rather than relying only on the upper jawbone. They may be considered as part of a carefully planned restoration when significant bone loss limits conventional implant support.

Pterygoid implants: support at the back of the upper jaw

Pterygoid implants use the pterygoid region behind the upper jaw for anchorage. In selected full-arch treatment plans, they can provide support toward the back of the restoration. Your surgeon explains how this differs from conventional implant placement.

Planning specialist implant treatment

Your consultation reviews your health, jaw anatomy, imaging, and goals. We discuss alternatives, including grafting or other restorative approaches, along with anesthesia, risks, and the stages of treatment.

Part of a full-arch plan

Zygomatic and pterygoid implants may be used together or alongside other implants in a full-arch plan. Walsh offers the PATZI approach for selected upper-jaw cases. Your surgeon explains which implant positions are being considered and why.

Whether temporary teeth can be fitted at surgery depends on your treatment and implant stability. Final teeth and continuing maintenance are coordinated with your restorative team.
