Pre-prosthetic surgery prepares the gums and jawbone for a denture or another dental prosthesis. We evaluate where reshaping or other preparatory care may help before your restoration is made.

Pre-prosthetic surgery adjusts the bone or gum tissues before a complete or partial denture is made. Following tooth loss, uneven ridges, sharp areas, or changes in soft tissue can make an appliance difficult to seat comfortably. Your dentist may refer you for an assessment.
The examination considers bone contours, undercuts, excess or mobile gum tissue, and benign bony growths called tori. A tight tissue attachment may also pull against a denture edge. The procedure is chosen around your anatomy and the design of the planned appliance.
Alveoloplasty smooths and reshapes the jawbone ridge. Other options remove excess tissue, reduce tori that interfere with fit, or release a restrictive frenum. Some preparatory work can be completed during the same appointment as planned tooth extractions.
Your dentist needs healed, stable tissues before final impressions for the new appliance. Treatment may include several weeks of healing, often four to eight, depending on the procedure and individual progress. Follow the surgical instructions and keep appointments so the team can assess readiness.
