Mouth changes that deserve attention

Oral pathology concerns diseases of the mouth, jaws, and surrounding tissues. Conditions range from infections and benign growths to precancerous changes and oral cancer. An abnormal area may be painless, so its appearance and how long it has been present matter.

What to share at your examination

Arrange an evaluation for a sore lasting more than two weeks, persistent red or white patches, unusual lumps or thickening, unexplained numbness, or difficulty chewing or swallowing. Tell the team when the change began and whether it is changing. You can contact the office directly.

Oral examination and biopsy

Your surgeon reviews symptoms and medical history, examines the mouth, and may use imaging for possible bone involvement. A suspicious area may need a small tissue sample under local anesthesia. A pathologist examines the sample in a laboratory.

Understanding your biopsy results

The office explains the findings and next steps. Depending on the diagnosis, care may involve monitoring, medication, removal, or coordination with other specialists. The source estimates biopsy results in approximately one to two weeks; individual timing can vary.
