Gum grafting can add tissue around areas of recession and help protect exposed tooth roots.
What the condition means.
How your care is planned.
Know your next step.
Dr. Cameron Walsh and Dr. Kevin Sims provide gum-grafting care at Walsh. They assess the cause and extent of recession and explain which approach may help protect your teeth and support your gum health.
Gum recession exposes more of a tooth or its root as tissue pulls back. Gum disease, naturally thin tissue, vigorous brushing, and some orthodontic movement can contribute. Exposed roots may become sensitive, more vulnerable to decay, or make teeth appear longer.
Your clinician evaluates the amount and cause of recession, the surrounding tissues, and your concerns. The goal may include protecting an exposed root, adding tissue thickness, or improving the gumline. The recommended technique depends on the site and available healthy tissue.
Options include tissue from the roof of your mouth, tissue moved from a nearby healthy area, or processed human donor tissue. Your team explains the source and approach proposed for you, along with anesthesia and sedation options.
The recipient area is prepared, and graft tissue is positioned and secured with fine sutures. Follow the specific instructions provided to protect the healing site. The team discusses how the chosen approach relates to sensitivity, tissue support, and the appearance of your smile.
