Exposing healthy tooth structure

Crown lengthening reshapes gum tissue, and sometimes underlying bone, to expose more natural tooth. It may be recommended when decay or a fracture extends near or below the gumline and your dentist needs enough accessible tooth for a crown or filling.

Restorative and appearance goals

The procedure can create space between a planned restoration and the supporting gum and bone. In other cases, carefully adjusting excess gum tissue can reveal more tooth length. Your consultation distinguishes the requirements of a restoration from any change you want in your smile.

Coordinated with your dentist

The surgeon examines the area, reviews necessary imaging, and discusses the restorative plan with your dentist. Under appropriate anesthesia, gum tissue is reshaped; a small amount of bone may also be adjusted. Sutures hold the tissue at its planned position.

Healing before the final restoration

Initial gum healing and final tissue stability are different stages. Treatment may include initial healing over one to two weeks, with several more weeks before final restorative work. Your team confirms readiness and coordinates the next appointment rather than relying on a fixed date.
